Today is Bloggers Without Makeup day, which is the brainchild of the lovely Jodie from Mummy Mayhem
Jodie came up with the idea from reading “stars without make up” in Who magazine and an episode of Desperate Housewives.
It is an initiative to just be ourselves, that we don’t need to be ‘made up’ all the time to look and feel beautiful. True beauty comes from within…. not from a bottle.
It had me thinking though.. “How long have we been so preoccupied with our looks?” 40’s and 50’s housewives wore dresses and make up without a hair out of place. You had ‘housework’ dresses or dress pants and then you had your ‘when the husband gets home’ dresses and then you had your good going out clothing, all the while having perfect face and hair. My grandmother was the epitome of this, everyday she used Oil of Ulan and wore make up until the day she died. Have we evolved from that way of thinking? Or progressed to an egocentric society where looks are everything? I guess by the sales figures of beauty products and cosmetic surgery, it is the latter. Do we really want young girls growing up to think like this? I know of 9 yr olds who wear make up and heels, mini skirts and knee high boots… it is scary (I’m so lucky I have boys who don’t care what they look like or wear)!!
I don’t wear make up everyday but I do wear an SPF tinted moisturiser. I am very aware of sun damage to skin; dark patches, wrinkles and skin cancer (my mum had a melanoma removed from her nose), so that is why I wear the spf everyday. My skin is dry, so that is why I use the moisturiser…. you can never have too much moisturiser!!
So in the spirit of today, this is moi without make up:
Dark circles and all… excuse the off the shoulder top and tank top, this was taken after I had been on the treadmill.
Remember: True beauty comes from within!
