Who Says Women Can’t Propose?

Traditionally it is seen as a man’s job to propose to a woman. According to an old Irish tradition, the only day a woman can propose is on February 29th. Does that mean that in 2016, when we have the next leap year, millions of women will be rushing to propose to their man? No way! We can propose whenever we want to! Don’t let a silly, old tradition hold you back from doing what you want to do! Kick tradition to the curb and take our tips on how to propose to your boyfriend.

Don’t be scared

Lots of people will say that a man is only ready for marriage when he gets down on one knee and pulls out a ring. This is not true at all. Just because he hasn’t asked you yet, doesn’t mean he hasn’t thought long and hard about it. He might just be waiting for the perfect time. If you feel like the right thing to do is to propose, just go for it. Don’t hold back and don’t be scared.

Plan carefully

Trust me, after you get engaged you will do nothing but planning to sort out your wedding. Therefore, get into the swing of things with your proposal. You can’t just rush in blindly and hope for the best. This is one of the most incredible moments of your life so take the time to make it extra special. Think about the location. Is there somewhere special that means a lot to you both? Perhaps where you had your first date, or a favourite holiday.

Use your hobbies

When you propose you want to take into account all the things that you love to do as a couple. Using one of these as the backdrop for your day can make it all the more memorable. Or even better yet, why not treat him to his favourite thing. If he loves watching sport, and that is usually something you can’t stand, show him how much you love him by taking him to see a match.

Getting a ring

It is hard to know what kind of an engagement ring to get when a woman proposes. Typically when it is done the other way round, the man will go shopping for Diamond engagement rings. There’s no right answer to the question of what ring should you buy. The choice is fully up to you. Try to find something that matches his personality or symbolises something special between the two of you.

Consider his feelings

Some men’s egos might take a bit of a bashing being proposed to by their girlfriends. Don’t brag to his friends too much as it might make him feel awkward. However, if you think your boyfriend will be really offended by your proposing, maybe think twice about surprising him. Perhaps you could come to a mutual decision by talking through your future plans.

So what are you waiting for? Don’t put this off for February 29th. Don’t wait for Beyonce to have to remind you that if you like it, then you should put a ring on it.
