WSS Home: 2016 Pinterest Home Colour Of The Year.
Regular readers will know we have posted the Pantone colours of the year for the last three years now, with this years colours being light blue and pink. However, it seems Pinterest is looking to take on the colour authority with their own users predicting what the most popular colour will be. As opposed to colour trends seen on couture runways.
After analysing more than 2.6 billion home pins from the past year, the online-pinboard site, Pinterest, saw a 20% increase in grey interior pins over the past year, becoming the most common colour in the home decor category. With 70 millions users, that is a lot of love for all things grey!
Like white and cream, grey is a neutral colour that doesn’t date and can easily be incorporated into your existing decor. Grey contrasts well with most colours but make sure you don’t use too much in one area ie. if you have a grey lounge suite (like I do), accent with brighter colours to add some interest or with white and black.
Living Rooms
I have ombre grey cushions with black shiny cushions (from Kmart) to contrast with our dark grey lounge suite, white drapes over our double sliding doors and white wood blinds (both from Freedom). Our wooden coffee table, lamp table and tv unit off set the cool tones and add some warmth to the room.
Bedrooms
Grey is stunning in a bedroom and can add a contemporary elegance in any home design. An upholstered grey bedhead can look beautiful and classic in design.

Kitchens and Bathrooms
Grey cabinets in kitchens and bathrooms are also a huge trend. Grey is overtaking white as the preferred door and cabinet colour of choice. The soft grey in a kitchen is soft to the eyes and gives a clean and sophisticated look. Grey is an understated colour but shows sleekness, sophistication and class. For homeowners who prefer a contemporary to modern design, grey is a favourite choice!
Walls
Grey walls have become quite popular and have over taken cream as the most preferred wall colour. Light grey with white trim on window frames, skirting and cornices suits most house styles; from modern, contemporary and country to historic Victorian homes.
Furniture
Grey furniture can bring softness to a home and will never date. Where black and wood browns used to be key colours with furniture, now you have more muted tones witch bring warmth to a room. Think coffee tables, tv units, lamp tables, dining settings, bedside tables and drawers.
Of course, you can always paint over your existing furniture to give the pieces an update. There are some fantastic chalk paints around, which give a matt appearance to the paint.
