How to Put on Quilt Covers Like a Pro
We love a snuggly doona during those cooler nights. But, did you know what their function actually is or how to easily put a quilt cover on it?
A quilt or doona (as we call them in Australia) is a flat material bag, which is filled with thermally insulating material, such as wool, down or polyester fill. Quilts/doonas, are often confused with comforters because both perform the same function and go on top of sheets but a quilt is usually heavier, thicker, and fluffier than a comforter or bedspread. Comforters and bedspreads are usually used on those warm summer nights.
Quilt covers are used for many reasons, they are lightweight, thinner, and easier to wash than the quilt which makes them easy to care for. You can wash them regularly for a fresh look and, hygienically, they should be washed once a week.
Quilt covers also protect the quilts, just like pillow covers cover the pillows and save them from dirt, dust, and germs keeping them clean and tidy which increases the lifetime of the quilt and saves you money in the long run. Quilt covers also allow you to personalise the look of your bedding offering you a variety of styles, colours, and designs which bring a pop of colour to your place just like sheets.
The only problem encountered when it comes to quilt covers is that they are a bit tricky to put on the doonas themselves. This drives away many people from using quilt covers. In this article, we will be presenting you the easiest method to get your quilt covers on the doonas.

How do you to put on quilt/doona covers??
Method#1
- To put on the quilt covers you need to grab your favourite quilt cover and doona. Remember to have the matching size quilt cover for your doona.
- Turn the inside of the quilt cover out and spread it all over your bed. The opening of your cover must be at the foot side of the bed.
- Lay the doona on the cover and spread it evenly all over the quilt cover. Find the inner ties and tie them. If there aren’t any inner ties, use safety pins or stitches to fasten the doona’s corner to the cover to keep the doona in place inside the cover.
- Fold all of the doona and bring the opening side of the cover around the folded doona & close the opening end with a button, zipper, or ties depending upon whatever the cover has.
- Now unroll the doona to the top side of your bed. Balance the doona all over inside the cover and hand press to remove the creases creating an even surface overall. There you go, the cover is all on and ready to go on the bed.
Method #2
- Lay the doona uniformly over the bed ensuring that no crease or folding exists. Flip the cover inside out and grab the top two corners by hand keeping the cover inside out.
- Next, grab the top corners of the doona and put the cover on the doona from the top grabbed corners of the cover sliding it down all over the doona.
- Shake the doona well so that the cover adjusts completely on the doona. Grab the bottom corners of the doona and stitch or tie them inside the cover. Shake the cover well to bring fluff and softness to the doona.
- Close the opening end of the cover and there you go, your doona is ready to go on the bed.

Why you should use quilt covers?
Quilt covers cover the doona completely like the pillow covers and save it from the dust, dust mites, dirt, and germs. They also protect the doona from getting greasy and oily by absorbing all the body moisture and keeping to itself which retains the texture of the doona and keeps it free of any foul smell.
A few doona covers are padded with insulating materials which act as an added insulation layer. Such covers are often heavy and are used for the winter season or cold sleepers. They add more to the thermal insulation of the doonas making them warmer and cosier. Also, doonas are heavier and cannot be washed at home and need to be dry cleaned only. So doona/quilt covers act as a protecting layer and makes the cleaning process easier.
