International Cat Day: A Little Celebration of Our Feline Family Members
Every August the 8th, cat lovers around the world get their own dedicated day to celebrate the small, independent, endlessly entertaining creatures who somehow take over an entire household while barely lifting a paw. International Cat Day has been around since 2002, started by the International Fund for Animal Welfare to raise awareness for cats in need and to simply celebrate the joy they bring into our lives.
In our house, that celebration has a name: Mister Meowgi.
The Cat Who Runs the Show
If you’ve followed along here for a while, you’ll know Daisy and Max, our golden retriever and shih tzu poodle cross, get plenty of airtime. But Mister Meowgi holds his own corner of the family, and he knows it. There’s something about a cat’s presence that’s different to a dog’s. Where Daisy and Max are all enthusiasm and loyalty worn on their sleeves, Mister Meowgi operates on his own terms, and somehow that makes it even more special when he chooses to curl up beside you or headbutt your hand for a pat.
He’s found his own way into the rhythm of our home, claiming the warmest spot on the couch, supervising from the windowsill, and generally reminding all of us, dogs included, that he’s not to be messed with.
Why a Day Like This Matters
It might seem like a small thing, a novelty day on the calendar, but International Cat Day is also a genuine reminder of the millions of cats still waiting for homes. If you’ve ever thought about adding a cat to your family, days like this are a lovely nudge to consider adoption through your local shelter or rescue organisation, rather than a breeder. Some of the best companions I know, feline and otherwise, came from a shelter with nothing but time and love to offer.
A Few Ways to Mark the Day
You don’t need to do much to celebrate. A few ideas if you’re looking for inspiration:
Spend a little extra one-on-one time with your cat, even five minutes of proper play makes a difference
Try a new toy or treat to see what sparks their interest
Donate to a local animal shelter or rescue, even a small amount helps
Share a photo of your own feline family member and tag a fellow cat lover
However you choose to mark it, International Cat Day is really just an excuse to pause and appreciate the quiet, quirky companionship our cats bring to our everyday lives. Mister Meowgi certainly doesn’t need a special day to remind us he’s in charge, but it’s a nice excuse to give him an extra scratch behind the ears all the same.
