Red Light Therapy: What It Is, How It Works, and What the Science Actually Says

Red light therapy seems to be everywhere at the moment, from at-home LED face masks to full-body panels popping up in gyms and wellness studios. But is it actually worth the hype, or is it just another wellness trend riding a wave of TikTok testimonials? I wanted to properly dig into the science before writing this, so here’s what’s genuinely backed by research, and where the evidence is still catching up to the marketing.
What Is Red Light Therapy?
Red light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation or low-level laser therapy (LLLT), is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light, generally somewhere between 600 and 1,100 nanometres, to trigger a response inside your cells. Unlike UV light from the sun or a tanning bed, red light therapy doesn’t damage skin or DNA. It’s a much gentler, low-heat form of light exposure, and the idea has actually been studied since the 1960s.
The theory behind how it works comes down to your mitochondria, the energy-producing part of your cells. Red and near-infrared light is thought to boost mitochondrial function, helping cells produce more energy (ATP), which in turn is believed to support tissue repair, reduce inflammation, and encourage cell renewal.
What Are the Benefits of Red Light Therapy?
Skin health
This is where the evidence is strongest. Research has shown that consistent use of red light therapy can visibly improve skin texture and tone, and help soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The effects are real, though generally described as modest compared to more intensive treatments like laser resurfacing.
Hair growth
Studies on hereditary and hormonal hair loss have found that regular red light treatment can support hair regrowth and improve thickness over time, with some research suggesting it may be comparably effective to topical treatments like minoxidil for certain types of hair loss.
Muscle recovery and joint pain
Red light therapy is widely used by athletes and physiotherapists, and for good reason. Clinical studies point to improved muscle recovery, reduced stiffness, and pain relief for conditions like osteoarthritis. The FDA has authorised marketing of certain red light devices specifically for temporary pain relief in fibromyalgia.
Wound healing and inflammation
There’s solid evidence supporting red light therapy’s role in wound healing and reducing general inflammation, which is part of why it’s used clinically alongside other treatments in some medical settings.
Sleep and mood
Because red light doesn’t suppress melatonin the way blue light does, some evidence suggests using it in the evening may support better sleep quality. Light therapy more broadly is also an established treatment for seasonal affective disorder.
Where the evidence is still developing
You’ll see red light therapy marketed for everything from testosterone and thyroid support to blood sugar regulation and even ADHD. Some small early studies exist in these areas, but researchers are clear that these claims need much larger trials before they can be considered reliable. If you see a red light product promising to fix everything at once, take it with a grain of salt.
Is Red Light Therapy Safe?
Generally, yes. Because it doesn’t use UV light, red light therapy doesn’t carry the skin damage or cancer risk associated with tanning. The main precautions are wearing eye protection during sessions, avoiding use directly over any suspected skin malignancies, and checking with your doctor if you’re pregnant or manage a chronic health condition.
How to Use Red Light Therapy at Home
At-home devices range from small handheld wands and face masks to larger full-body panels. A few things genuinely matter if you want results rather than just a nice-looking glow:
Device quality: cheap LED strips marketed as “red light therapy” often don’t emit the correct wavelength or strength to have a therapeutic effect. Look for devices that specify their wavelength (ideally in the 630–670nm or 810–850nm range) and irradiance output.
Distance and duration: most quality panels are used somewhere between 15 and 45cm from the skin, for around 10–20 minutes per session.
Consistency over intensity: the research on skin and hair benefits is based on regular, repeated use over weeks, not a single session.
The Bottom Line
Red light therapy isn’t just wellness-industry noise. There’s genuinely solid science behind its benefits for skin, hair, muscle recovery and pain relief, with the FDA already recognising some specific uses. But it’s not a miracle cure-all, and plenty of the bigger claims doing the rounds online are still unproven. Approached with realistic expectations, and using a properly specified device, it’s one of the more evidence-backed additions you can make to a skincare or recovery routine.
