Simplify Your Life Week: A Real Way to Cut the Clutter (Not Just the Stuff)

This week (3 to 9 August) is Simplify Your Life Week, and I have to say, it landed at exactly the right moment for me this year. Not because my house is a mess, it’s more that everything else feels a bit full. Too many tabs open, too many things on the mental to-do list, too many “yeses” I probably shouldn’t have given.
If you’re feeling that too, here’s how I’m using this week properly, rather than just nodding along to the concept.
Start with your calendar, not your cupboards
Everyone jumps straight to decluttering the house, but the bigger drain for most of us is an overcommitted calendar. Look at the week ahead and be honest about what you said yes to out of guilt or habit rather than genuine want. This week, practice saying no to one thing you’d normally just absorb.
Pick one physical space, not the whole house
Simplify Your Life Week isn’t a licence for an exhausting, all-weekend purge. Choose one space, a wardrobe, the pantry, that drawer everything gets shoved into, and give it twenty minutes. The goal is momentum, not a full home renovation by Sunday night.
Clear the digital noise too
Unsubscribe from five email lists you never read. Delete the apps you open out of boredom rather than actual interest. Mute the group chats that only add noise. None of this takes long, and the relief is honestly disproportionate to the effort.
Simplify your “shoulds”
This is the one that matters most and gets talked about least. So much of our mental clutter isn’t physical at all, it’s the guilt-driven obligations, the outdated expectations we’re still carrying, the version of a “good week” we think we’re supposed to have. Take stock of what you’re doing because you genuinely want to, versus what you’re doing because you feel you should.
Protect some actual white space
Block out something in your calendar that is simply unscheduled. Not a task, not a chore, not “admin time.” Just space. We’re so used to filling every gap that leaving one empty can feel almost uncomfortable at first.
None of this needs to be dramatic. The point of this week isn’t to overhaul your entire life by Sunday, it’s a nudge to notice where things have gotten cluttered, physically or otherwise, and take a few honest steps to lighten the load before it all piles up again heading into the busier back half of the year.
What’s the one thing you’re simplifying this week? I’d genuinely love to know. Sometimes the best ideas come from what someone else has decided to let go of.
