Sip Your Way Across America: Why This Melbourne Dining Hotspot is the Ultimate September Date Night

If you are looking for an excuse to dress up, gather your girlfriends, or plan a spectacular date night this month, we have found it. Reine & La Rue, the spectacular two-hatted dining destination housed inside Melbourne’s historic former stock exchange, is playing host to a month-long celebration of American drinking culture.

September marks two major moments on the global drinks calendar: California Wine Month and Bourbon Heritage Month. To celebrate, California Wines has teamed up with the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States to bring a curated taste of the US straight to Collins Street.
For a venue like Reine & La Rue—which already anchors its prestigious wine list around three core regions: France, Australia, and the United States—the collaboration is a seamless match. The New York-style dining energy of the room pairs beautifully with the bold, contemporary flavours of top-tier American imports.
Here is what you can expect from the exclusive September menu:

The Wine List: A Californian Road Trip by the Glass
California produces more than 80 per cent of all American wine, boasting an incredible diversity of microclimates and terroirs. Throughout September, Head Sommelier Callie Poole is pouring four exceptional drops by the glass or bottle, allowing you to sample some of the state’s most iconic regions:
  • Hartford Court ‘Sevens Bench’ Chardonnay (Carneros): A beautiful expression of cool-climate California Chardonnay.
  • 2021 Robert Mondavi Fumé Blanc (Napa Valley): A bright, elegant, and definitive take on Sauvignon Blanc from the heart of Napa.
  • 2024 Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir (Santa Barbara County): Silky and expressive, showcasing the best of coastal, cool-climate viticulture.
  • 2021 Freemark Abbey Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley): A true piece of liquid history. Freemark Abbey was notably one of the very few wineries featured in the legendary 1976 Judgment of Paris blind tasting that put American wine on the global map.
The Cocktail: A New Twist on a Classic

If spirits are more your style, you won’t want to miss the venue’s exclusive, limited-edition take on the classic Whiskey Sour.
Crafted specifically for Bourbon Heritage Month, this signature cocktail features rich Yellowstone Bourbon shaken with fresh mandarin and lemon, complex toasted rice orgeat, and a subtle hint of pastis. It balances bright, summery citrus with the deep, warm spice of finely crafted American bourbon—making it the ultimate celebratory aperitif.

Broadening Our Palates

According to Callie Poole, the partnership responds directly to a shift in how Melburnians are approaching their evening drinks.
“We’re seeing Australians become much more adventurous in what they’re drinking, and we love being able to help people explore new producers, regions and styles in an approachable and considered way,” Poole notes. “September gives us a great opportunity to lean further into that and introduce guests to some exceptional California wines alongside American Bourbon.”
Whether you are a seasoned oenophile curious about Napa vs. Santa Barbara, or simply looking for an elegant spot to enjoy a world-class cocktail in a breathtaking heritage architectural space, Reine & La Rue is the place to be this month.
