Here Is Why Women Are Transitioning to Period Pants and Turning Their Backs On Single-Use Products

Period underwear used to be a special niche product that only women who could afford them buy.  However, these days, due to their already-proven benefits, more women are switching to using them despite their slightly expensive-than-traditional-panties price. To combat this, manufacturers of intimate wear have started producing their line to meet the increasing demand for the product. With the rise in supply, the cost of the product has decreased, effectively attracting more customers.

But what is this clamor for period pants that women have started turning their backs on the more popular menstrual products? And is it worth investing in them?

The Beginnings of Period Pants

While the period pants you see nowadays are manufactured using modern fabrics and cutting-edge technology, the idea for specially designed undergarments with built-in barriers for menstrual flow has been around since the mid-1980s. For example, a Chinese manufacturer in 1988 applied for a patent for women’s menstruation underpants with two parts, a waist, and a seat part, with a crotch area that has two layers of cloth and a thin film of plastic sandwiched between it.

This idea gave birth to the industry for alternative menstrual products. And manufacturers are continuously finding different materials and technology to improve period pants to make them accessible to all women and help address the urgent need to protect and preserve the environment.

What are Period Pants and How Do They Work?

Period underwear is simply an undergarment specially designed to be worn by women during their menstrual period to replace common menstrual care products. In addition, the crotch area has a built-in pad made up of several layers of special fabrics, each offering an additional feature to help you feel protected, fresh, dry, and comfortable while using it.

The different layers in the crotch area act as a built-in pad, with each layer focused on a different function, absorption, moisture-wicking, antimicrobial and antifungal properties. All these features combined are what make period panties so appealing to women.

The Joys of Period Pants

Nowadays, period pants represent the new age of menstrual health where women are given better and more convenient choices in dealing with their menstrual period while doing their share of lessening the environmental impact of single-use products like pads and tampons. Furthermore, because period pants are inconspicuous, it enables women to handle their menstruation conveniently, efficiently, and easily.

Here are other benefits of using period pants:

  • They are eco-friendly and sustainable. Period pants are made from sustainable materials such as pure organic cotton and sustainable and eco-friendly fabric, bamboo. Organic cotton is sourced from farmers who use the best sustainable practices. Cotton is what comprises the absorbent layer. Bamboo, with its multiple advantages of moisture-wicking, antibacterial, and antifungal properties, is what makes up another layer.
  • They are washable and reusable. Period pants, just like other regular panties, can be washed and reused for a long time as long as you do proper care procedures after each use. You would, however, need to buy several pairs to use while you are waiting for the other pairs to dry.
  • They are cost-effective. While period pants are slightly more expensive than regular panties because they are washable and can be reused, you won’t need to dispose of them and purchase a brand new pair each time you have to change, just like you would with single-use products.
  • They are comfortable. While wearing a panty with multiple layers in the crotch area might turn you off thinking they might be uncomfortable, the truth is, they are not. Each layer is so thin that they are even thinner than your conventional sanitary pads. And because each layer offers a unique feature like moisture-wicking, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties, it will leave you feeling fresh, dry, and comfortable all day long.

The use of period pants is gaining traction, and it seems they are here to stay. Women who have transitioned into using them instead of conventional menstrual care products are raving about the dramatic impact on their lives. So now the question is, are you ready to experience the joys these women have had from using period pants?
