Pantone Colours Of The Year 2016

Pantone, THE authority on all things colours and colour forecaster, have announced their two colours for 2016. Yes, usually Pantone usually announces only one colour, but this year they have gone with two colours. Well, a blend of two colours actually (as per the picture above), Rose Quartz (a dusty light pink) and Serenity (a light blue).  The pastel colours are significantly different to last year’s dark hue, Marsala.

According to Pantone’s announcement about this year’s colours, “Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure,” said the team of colour experts in the statement. “Serenity is weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.”

Rose Quartz and Serenity have been chosen to represent gender equality and gender fluidity.

“In many parts of the world, we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted colour trends throughout all other areas of design. This more unilateral approach to colour is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumer’s increased comfort with using color as a form of expression, a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged and an open exchange of digital information that has opened our eyes to different approaches to color usage.”

What a fantastic concept!

In celebration of these gorgeous colours, we’ve put together a curated collection of clothing, accessories and homeware pieces inspired by the colours Rose Quartz and Serenity.

Clothing:

It is easy to incorporate light pink and blues into most wardrobes, especially during Spring and Summer. Blush pink is huge this season and you will see it everywhere in stores at the moment. Of course, you need pretty underwear underneath and we love Simone Pérèle’s Bloom collection. The gorgeous collection comes in both light pink and blue (as pictured below).

Accessories:

Accessories finish off and add polish to an outfit and light pink/ nude shoes and handbags can add a stylish and sophisticated element to any outfit. Neutral shoes can also visually lengthen legs, which is an added bonus. Of course, light blue can be worn year round and will go with most colours.

Home:

Pastels can be easily added into most homes, the only exception would be of you had red walls or furniture.  Pink and blue cushions add a pop of colour and interest to white, cream, black, brown and grey sofas. While a pastel pink doona cover can add a modern, feminine element to a bedroom without looking too “girly”, whereas a light blue can make a bedroom stylish without the strong masculine element. We love pretty tea sets in pastel pink and Cristina Re has some of the most gorgeous kitchenware we have seen. Country Road has a fantastic range of pastel pink and blue homewares (such as mugs and vases) and linen (such as bedding, cushions, tea towels and bathroom accessories).
