3 Benefits Your Elderly Loved One Can Enjoy with Independent Living

Retirement is the time for individuals to kick back and enjoy the rest of their lives doing the things they enjoy most. They also get to enjoy these activities without having to worry about home ownership if they consider one of the many living arrangements available.

Many seniors opt for independent living. There are several reasons for this. Some benefits they can enjoy are listed here.

1. New Opportunities for Personal Growth and Socializing

One of the biggest benefits of independent living for seniors is the opportunity for personal growth and socialising. When seniors are living alone, keeping up with favourite activities and maintaining friendships is difficult. This is even more of an issue if the senior has problems driving.

Depression and loneliness may set in. That’s an unhealthy situation for some seniors. Studies have shown that seniors who are lonely often suffer issues such as high blood pressure, heart disease, strokes, and memory loss.

When a senior or their family chooses independent living, they can prevent the diseases associated with cases of isolation. This living situation allows the senior to socialise with like-minded people, and they can even meet new friends.

Even more appealing, residents can take part in engaging activities each day. These include things like exercise classes, reading groups, chess, bridge, and more. There’s something everyone can enjoy, regardless of the activities they enjoy.

2. Availability of Custom Meal Plans

Some seniors enjoy cooking for themselves in their own kitchens. With independent living, they can do just that if they prefer.

For others, though, cooking each day is a burden. When living at home, many seniors may not cook at all, leading to issues related to malnutrition

With an independent living community, this issue is resolved. Many of these communities provide meal plans allowing residents to eat together in a restaurant- or cafeteria-style setting. The food served is delicious and fresh and will accommodate the special dietary needs of the person.

What this means is that the senior no longer has to go to the grocery store or prepare food. It gives them more time to relax and enjoy other activities that lead to personal growth.

3. No More Housekeeping or Home Maintenance

Purchasing a home is a huge milestone in any young adult’s life. However, trying to maintain it is quite a bit of work. Just a few include mowing the lawn, shoveling snow, and taking care of the yard.

Inside, there are just as many or more tasks. Just think about it. Cleaning the bathroom and kitchen, making repairs, vacuuming, and more.

When a person is young, they can handle these chores easily. However, as a person ages, they become more difficult. After a senior retires, they often want to get rid of this burden.

Independent living will make this possible. Regardless of the housing selected, residents pay a maintenance fee along with the rent. The staff, rather than the resident, are responsible for all these tasks.

Independent Living: Is it the Right Option?

When a senior reaches a certain age, being able to sit back and enjoy life is often a top priority. With independent living, this is possible.

However, this is something that each person has to figure out for their own life and situation. The information here, though, makes the idea of independent living appealing.
