All You Need To Know About Vaping

As a traditional or a social smoker who is thinking of quitting you might have heard about vaping and how it helps to quit the habit of smoking.  You are not alone, even despite the tremendous growth of the vaping industry in the past few years, many people are not aware of what it is. Many have doubts about vaping and if you are a beginner, check out some details below:

What is Vaping?

Vaping is also referred to as e-cigarettes. These are devices that operate on a battery that heats the device so that the liquid present in it releases vapour (aerosol). The liquid present in the e-cigarette contains many substances like propylene, glycol, flavourings and most among other things nicotine. They come with either disposable or refillable tanks where the liquid is filled. There are many different types of e-cigarettes available in the market and all of them contain nicotine and look and work like cigarettes. 

Types of Vaporizers

Vaping is easy to get started and all you have to do is know about the vaporiser styles and the choice of liquid to be used. While choosing vaporisers, ensure that the device you buy is of good quality as it can pose many threats to your health which is not related to vaping.  The vaporisers are similar looking to cigarettes and there are mainly four types. 

E-cigarettes: They look just like cigarettes and have replaceable cartridges where e-liquid can be filled, It is also called e-cigs which is good for everyone including people who are new to vaping and have a look and feel similar to the original cigarettes.  

Pocket vapes: These are smaller than e-cigarettes and hence more portable. Like the e-cigs, these are also easy to use but produce more vapor than the former.

Pen vaporiser: These look like a pen and are spherical in shape. They have a battery and an atomiser as the main components. The e-liquid that produces the vapour is in a tank that has the atomiser. The battery provides the heat to the atomiser to produce the vapour. 

Box mods: While the three mentioned vaporisers are mainly for beginners because it is easy to use, the box mods is for the experienced vapours. After getting an intro to vaping using the simple vaporisers, the box mod can be used as it is more complicated and advanced. It has a digital screen to change the settings and a large battery box. It is for those who wish to increase the amount of vapour they want to inhale. 

E-liquid composition

The e-liquid that goes into the vaporiser is also called the e-juice and it is this which gets converted into a vapour that is later inhaled. These e-liquids are composed of VP (Vegetable Glycerin), PG (Propylene Glycol), nicotine and flavouring. 

Type of e-liquids

After you have figured out the type of vaporiser you want to use, next is to choose the e-liquid or e-juice that you like. There are more than 7,000 e-juice flavors available and all these can be categorised under three types namely the single flavors, combination and VG flavors. Most of the e-juices are a mix of VP (Vegetable Glycerine) and PG (Propylene Glycol). If you are looking for a fruit flavor there are a few which only have VG. When picking an e-juice keep a check on the VG: PG ratio as more VG means it will be sweeter. There are flavors that have the taste of tobacco too for those who like it. 

Another important thing to consider is the nicotine portion as it varies in e-liquid with some types not having it at all. Try out different flavors to find out what works best for you. 

Things to know about vaping

The feel: Different people have different experiences of vaping and hence the feel varies. But in general, it feels lighter on the lungs and even after vaping it all-day people report that they don’t feel sick, unlike smoking. People who have moved to vape also feel that skin and oral health has improved. Additionally, compared to smoking, depending on the vapour it feels more heavy and wet but also giving a pleasant and aromatic flavor. 

It is safer than smoking: There is no conclusive proof that vaping is better than smoking as science has not yet determined it. But there are a few stats that support the theory that vaping is safer than smoking. 

  • As per a report by the Public Health England vaping is 95% safer than smoking. 
  • Vaporizers are way less dangerous than cigarettes
  • American Heart Association reports that it can even help smokers quit cigarettes
  • Royal College of Physicians opines that the benefits of vaping are so much that it outweighs any risks it carries. 

It is less dangerous to secondhand smokers: E-cigs are less dangerous to the people and the environment than smoking cigarettes or tobacco. When a person smokes there are many toxic chemicals that get released along with tar which is not only harmful to the smoker but also the people around him/her. Though there is no foolproof evidence that vaping is not dangerous to secondhand smokers but since there is no combustion or tar unless it is activated there is no vapour production and less harmful. But in contrast, a cigarette even after it is burnt out the ash in the ashtray can be harmful due to slow combustion. Also, the vapour from a vaporiser gets mixed with the air stream and hence does not stay long when compared to the smoke of a cigar.  

Vaping rules: Vaporisers do not leave a smell that lingers for long like traditional tobacco but it is still best to follow the rules of the land and also be considerate to other people. Check if vaping is allowed in public places before using it. Generally, it is best to avoid vaping in restaurants, private places unless it is mentioned that it is allowed. Since not many people are aware of vaping and there are chances that if you vape in their presence they may not like it. 

Use vaping as a way to get rid of your smoking habit after consulting your doctor and not because it is something cool.
