Common Mental Health Issues Among Young Women: Their Causes and Cures

Mental Disorders affect different genders differently. However, many studies show that there are some issues that are unique to women, especially girls in their teens such as depression, anxiety etc. Such conditions can severely impact physical health too.  Here are some common mental health issues women face throughout their lives and how you can cure them.


Anxiety usually begins at a very young age in women. Today, it has become the most common disorder among teen girls. The symptoms are increased worrying, exhaustion, and tension or fear. There are multiple reasons that come into play that could cause anxiety. Some of them are social and cultural norms, there are multiple biological reasons like hormonal imbalance that is caused during the growing years (12-18)  can lead to anxiety. Meditation is one of the most effective ways to deal with it. Try to relax as much as you can and get a good night’s sleep. 

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder 

Post From Traumatic stress disorder also known as PTSD is another common disorder found in women. It is a type of anxiety disorder that also includes panic, generalized anxiety, phobias, separation anxiety, etc. it is one of those disorders that is found about four times in women when compared to men. A possible cause could be that when you are young women, in general, have more traumatic experiences like trauma resulting due to sexual abuse and assault. PTSD worsens if you adopt unhealthy coping mechanisms. The best option would be to book an appointment with a therapist and deal with this in a proper manner as it is an extremely sensitive disorder. 

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

ADHD in teen girls is often viewed as a character trait rather than a symptom of a mental disorder.  The symptoms of this condition include emotions of being overwhelmed and exhausted. Psychological distress, feelings of a medical see, lower self-esteem, and chronic stress are common. Some other symptoms include overspending, disorganization, etc. ADHD and diet go hand in hand. What you consume can really help with your hyperactivity. Certain types of diets like consuming high protein foods can improve concentration. Supplements like Omega-3 fatty acids can also be extremely useful. It is imperative to deal with it as early as possible because it can cause mental as well physical trouble when you grow up. 


Women go through rapid changes during their teen years. Hormones play a significant role when dealing with such a condition. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder and premenstrual syndrome can lead to severe anxiety and depression. Along with the hormones, social issues also play a very major role in causing depression among young women. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder 

OCD is a very common type of mental issue faced by almost everyone. It is characterised by recurring thoughts that lead to the repetition of particular actions or behaviour. These types of recurring thoughts make you feel anxious all the time and can affect your daily life and known as obsessions. This obsession varies from person to person. Teens with OCD experience anxiety and distress to relieve this anxiety they do some repeated actions which are commonly known as compulsions.

 Compulsions tend to temporarily provide relief from anxiety. Some common compulsions include cleanliness, order, hoarding, safety, accounting, etc. The treatment of OCD is found to be very effective and most people who receive treatment recover completely. Depending upon the severity of OCD treatment can include medications or therapies etc. Cognitive-behavioural therapy has resulted in some great results when it comes to OCD4. 

Looking after your mental health should be your number one priority especially when you’re in your growing years. These disorders can have an immeasurable and irreversible impact on your physical health as well, so you must take care and receive treatment whenever any of these symptoms arise.
