The V Word: What Does Vaginal Dryness Feel Like?

The typical vagina is coated in a thin layer of moisture. This is to create an environment that makes it easier for sperm to reach an egg.

The vaginal secretions also lubricate the vaginal wall. This reduces friction during vaginal intercourse.

As a woman gets older, there are changes in her hormonal production. This can cause the vaginal walls to get thinner. When a wall is thinner, fewer cells are able to produce moisture.

This can lead to something known as vaginal dryness. Hormonal changes are a common cause of vaginal dryness but there are other causes too.

So what does vaginal dryness actually feel like? We’re glad you asked. If you’d like to learn the answers and more about the subject, then keep reading along!

What Does Vaginal Dryness Feel Like?

When you are experiencing vaginal dryness, you might notice discomfort in the pelvic and vaginal areas.

Vaginal dryness can also cause vaginal stinging or itching. You also might get a UTI (urinary tract infection).

You might also feel soreness, burning, and can lose interest in having sex. If you do have sex, it might be painful.

Light bleeding after sex is also common. You might even feel like you have a numb vagina

Unfortunately, there are a lot of women out there who feel embarrassed when they experience this. However, it is very common and there is nothing to be ashamed about. It is important that you discuss your systems with both your partner and your doctor.

When to Get Medical Assistance

Vaginal dryness is very common and usually not a cause for concern. However, if you experience pain for several days or during sex then you should speak to your doctor.

If it goes untreated, you might crack the vaginal tissue and experience sores.

If you notice vaginal bleeding then you should definitely see a doctor.

As you get an exam, your doctor will probably look at the vaginal walls to see if they can find any lacerations. They also might take a sample of vaginal discharge. This can help them spot dangerous bacteria.

Hormone tests can also help see if you are in menopause or perimenopause.

How Can You Avoid Vginal Dryness?

First and foremost, you should avoid irritating products, like douches. You also don’t want to use condoms that contain N-9 (also known as nonoxynol-9).

These condoms contain chemicals that can lead to vaginal dryness.
