Our vision is something we take for granted until it starts to deteriorate. Therefore, it’s important to be careful and do everything in our power to keep our eyes healthy and in good shape. Sometimes it’s difficult to pinpoint the issue, but if you feel any symptoms that could be related to your eyes, be sure to react so it won’t get worse. There are certain measures that all of us can do to save the vision. If you’re feeling worried about your eyesight, here are six tips that will help you preserve your sight and improve the quality of your life:

1. Limit your screen exposure

Nowadays, we’re so glued to screens so it’s sometimes impossible to look away. Most of the work is computer related, so if you’re, due to work, constantly staring into the screen, it’s understandable if it’s difficult to find the time and give your eyes a rest. Even after work, people stare into their phones, tablets, e-readers, and TV, which is understandable since the majority of our entertainment relies on screen usage. Therefore, you can limit exposure to the screens, so for example, instead of using the e-reader, you can opt for a physical book. Instead of watching TV, try some exercise or spending time outdoors. Find a fulfilling hobby that doesn’t require you to stare into the screen, such as cooking, painting or gardening. There are too many options, so be patient and explore everything until you find something that you love.

2. Adjust screen brightness

Considering that we use screen devices all the time, it’s difficult to just stop. Emails, notifications, text messages aren’t easy to ignore, but what you can do is adjust your screen brightness so your exposure won’t be damaging to your eyes. 3.  Check your eyesight

Even if you don’t wear glasses, going for regular checkups can significantly help you save your vision. You should find an experienced optometrist that will be able to answer all your questions and give you valuable advice. Our vision tends to get worse as we age, so talking to a doctor can be beneficial on many levels. You should find a doctor that seems reliable and check your eyes at least once a year.

If you don’t know who to choose, talk to your GP and ask for recommendations, or consult a friend or a relative who’s already wearing glasses. Just remember that there’s no reason to be worried, especially if you’re living a healthy lifestyle overall.

4. Wear sunglasses

Sunglasses are considered a fashion detail, but if you have sensitive eyes, it’s advisable to invest in a pair of quality sunglasses in order to protect your eyesight from sunlight or dust. There are too many cheap options but you have to know that they’re usually not that good. Instead, choose a pair that has 100 percent UV protection, so you’ll be safe even if there’s no direct sunlight around you. Your eyes are too precious to spend money on cheap sunglasses from the mall. Buying a pair that is a bit pricier may sound unnecessary, but it’s more useful in the long run.

5. Change your diet

Some people can experience eye strain due to the poor diet. Vitamin deficiency can negatively influence retinal function and performance. Zinc, vitamin C, omega 3 fatty acids can all help you see better. Eat green leafy vegetables, whole grains, cold water fish and nuts will improve your eyesight and make you feel better. Aside from helping you with eyesight, a well-balanced diet will also maintain your body-weight, reduce depression and anxiety and improve the quality of your sleep. You can treat yourself to your favourite snacks sometimes, but make sure to do it in moderation.
