WSS Style Edit: The Trench Coat
When Thomas Burberry designed the first coat specifically for WWI soldiers fighting in the trenches (hence the name the ‘trench’ coat) in 1914, he would never have known how iconic and popular his coats were to become.
The trench coat is synonymous with style and sophistication, adding a polished look to even the most casual outfits like jeans, a tee-shirt, and ballet flats. Of course, for a French chic look, the tee should be a striped tee like the Breton style below.
Autumn/Winter 2022 is no exception with the trench coat being one of the essential items to have for the season. The trench is perfect for trans-seasonal wear over a light top or tee and a silk or cotton scarf for Autumn and layered over a knit and wool scarf for Winter.
I have a few trench coats I have had for years, such as a classic bone coloured trench from Sportscraft, a red trench from Target and the Iconic Trench from Trenery. Sussan has a gorgeous trench in their collection this year too.
A trench is one of those pieces in your wardrobe that you can wear in every situation you can think of. Wear it to work over a work suit, dress, skirt or pants, and shirt or top. Casually over jeans and top (as mentioned above) or on a night out over a dress, wide-leg pants, and a sheer top.
If your bank balance doesn’t stretch to a $3,490 Burberry trench, we have sourced some gorgeous trench coats from around the net for you. Our favourite is the trench coat from Portmans (The first coat pictured below). It is a steal at $169.95 and it will last for years:
