Brooklyn is a 2015 historical period drama film directed by John Crowley and written by Nick Hornby and is based on a novel by Colm Tóibín of the same name.
In 1952, Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan) leaves Ireland to immigrate to Brooklyn, where she has a better chance of finding work, arranged by an Irish priest in Brooklyn. Working in a shop, she takes a bookkeeping course and participates in the Irish community.
Crushed by homesickness, Eilis finds her spirits lifted when she meets a tough Italian plumber (Emory Cohen), and falls in love. They marry but she wants to see her mother after the death of her sister in Ireland. Returning home, she falls into the life of the small town and faces temptation from another man (Domhnall Gleeson). Eilis finds herself torn between two countries and the two men who love her.
Brooklyn opens in Australian cinemas on the 11th February. Just in time for Valentine’s Day!
Brooklyn has received many nominations for industry and critics awards including three nominations for the 88th Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actress.
Ronan’s performance, in particular, was praised and has garnered her Oscar, BAFTA, Critics’ Choice, Golden Globe, and SAG nominations for best actress.She has also won the BIFA Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a British Independent Film. Julie Walters was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the BAFTAs.
The film won the Audience Favorite Gold Award in World Cinema at the Mill Valley Film Festival, the Rogers People’s Choice Award at the Vancouver International Film Festival and the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature at the Virginia Film Festival. Cohen was named Breakthrough Performer at the Hamptons International Film Festival.
