Winter Hair Nightmare: 4 Ways to Prevent Split Ends This Season

Split ends are exactly what they sound like: your hair strands become damaged and the tips start splitting into two thinner strands.

This doesn’t make for a great look and it also indicates that your hair isn’t as healthy as it could be.

But why does it happen?

Well, there are many reasons that can lead to the splitting of your hair strands and one of them is the onset of winter.

Now, you can’t exactly avoid winter. But that doesn’t mean you can’t prevent your hair from getting split ends during this season. Keep reading and find out what you should do to keep your hair healthy even when temperatures are at their lowest!

1. Get Regular Trims

If you want your hair to grow as long as possible, going to the hair salon to get a haircut might seem like a scary thought. What if they cut too much?!

However, it’s beneficial for the health of your hair that you get regular trims – ideally once every six weeks.

Make it clear to the hairdresser than you don’t want any more than a small trim and you’ll see that your hair keeps growing healthier and with no split ends.

2. Keep Your Hair Moisturized

If your hair tends to be dry, your chances of getting split ends are slightly higher. For this reason, it’s important that you actively try to keep moist in your hair and there are a few ways you can do this.

Try out some dry hair remedies, like using dry shampoo instead of your regular one or going for a leave-in conditioner, and drink water regularly to hydrate the hair from the inside as well.

3. Beware of the Fabrics You Use on Your Head

Colder temperatures call for warm beanies and hats. However, certain fabrics can increase your risk of getting split ends.

If you wear a fabric that’s too heavy, it’ll pull your hair and cause it to become more fragile, and your ends might suffer the consequences.

4. Don’t Wash Your Hair Too Often

Since you know that split ends can be caused by a lack of moisture in your hair, you might feel tempted to start washing it more regularly and try to keep it hydrated this way.

However, that’s a no-no!

Washing your hair too often will ultimately lead it to dry out, which is not good for those ends.

We can’t tell you exactly how many times a week you should wash your hair: unfortunately, there’s no magical number that works for everyone. The secret is in experimenting until you find a number of times that keeps your hair always clean, but doesn’t make it dry and unhealthy.

Bye-Bye, Split Ends!

Split ends aren’t reversible, but they sure are preventable.

Having beautiful, healthy hair even when it’s cold is just a matter of treating the right way, using nourishing products and adopting habits that work best for your type of hair.

And if it’s too late and you already see those split ends creeping in on your hair, it’s time for a makeover! Visit your hairdresser and ask for a fresh haircut. Your hair will be healthy again and you’ll look super trendy!
