How to: Get out of the Mummy “Zombie Zone”

tired-mum

Feeling like a zombie by morning tea? Don’t have the energy to play with your kids? You may be in the Mummy “Zombie Zone”. Don’t despair, there are some great quick-fixes to boost your energy and get you back in the land of the living.

You can beat Mummy “Zombie Zone” in five easy steps:

1. Fill Up The Tank

Only zombies skip meals. You need to fill up your tank with smart, well-timed meals that keep you ready for anything. A good, well-balanced breakfast gives you a great start and a healthy mid-morning snack will push you along to lunch time.

Lunch should include protein. Protein helps you feel full for longer. Choose from eggs, beans, chickpeas, fish, chicken or meat. No zombie groans about being too busy! Just cook an extra serve with your evening meal and you’ll have an easy, heat-up meal for the next day! But avoid lunches with too much fat as these take longer to digest and give you that ‘heavy’ feeling. Fullness may make you feel sluggish.

2. Get Watered

Only zombies and camels can survive without water. You are a Mummy-machine and all machines work better when they are hydrated. Your body and your brain work better with lubrication in the form of water. Feeling hungry or fuzzy-headed? Get a quick fix with a couple of glasses of water. A dash of lemon gives a hint of taste and a quick dose of vitamin C and important antioxidants and electrolytes including iron, potassium and calcium.i

3. Get Support

Sometimes food just isn’t enough to get you through your day. Nutritional supplements can help to fill the gaps that your diet isn’t meeting. Supplements work in different ways by targeting different processes in the body. It is important to go for supplements that are developed from naturally occurring nutrients already found in the body, as they will mimic the action of that nutrient at its prime. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a nutrient produced naturally by our bodies that is responsible for energy production in all body cells.ii Ubiquinol is the active and readily absorbed form of CoQ10 that can work directly and efficiently in the body by helping to produce optimal energy. Also, Ubiquinol has the ability to help protect your body’s cells from oxidative stress and free radicals.iii Ubiquinol helps soak up oxidants, helping your body to repair and restore health. Taking Ubiquinol in supplement form is an efficient way to restore healthy levels of CoQ10 and optimise energy in the body.

4. Get Moving

You might not feel like lifting a finger but a simple walk can lift both mood and energy levels. Exercise has long been recognised for its benefits in increasing energy levels and fighting off feelings of fatigue. Working out in the middle of the day may help you stay motivated and productive for the duration of the afternoon. You’ll even think better after a brisk walk. Studies show that exercising not only provides more energy, but also helps improve thinking ability.iv

5. Avoid Hitting the Wall

As the afternoon rolls around, those sugar cravings start kicking in and you’re suddenly reaching for the lolly jar. Sugar may seem like the easiest solution to kick your energy into gear but a protein-rich snack is much more efficient in combating that afternoon slump. Nuts are a tasty and healthy protein-rich snack, in particular cashews, almonds and peanuts. Remember to mix it up from day-to-day so you don’t get bored of the same thing day in day out. Other protein-rich snacks to get you through the afternoon include hard-boiled eggs, tuna on crackers, natural yogurt and a fruit smoothie, among many others.
