What Are the Different Types of Breast Implants That Exist Today?
There have been recent significant developments in 3D bioprinted breast implants. This research is due to the 40% of breast cancer patients needing to undergo mastectomies.
But there are many other reasons why you might want breast enlargement surgery. You may be a trans woman seeking a more feminine figure or you might be a cis-gendered woman who simply wants to increase your breast size. Regardless, this procedure is your choice and it can make a positive difference to your mental health and wellbeing.
And though 3D breasts aren’t available yet, there are lots of types of breast implants out there for you to choose from. Here is a list of the ones that you can have today!
Silicone Breast Implants
One of the most popular types of breast implants is silicone implants. These have a silicone gel liquid interior and a silicone shell exterior. They feel like natural tissue and, in the US, silicone implants are available for people ages 22 and upward.
Another variation of silicone implants is “gummy bear” implants. The outer silicone shell is firmer than normal silicone implants and they have a tapered appearance. If they rotated their shape, the breast augmentation may not look natural.
Other shapes include round, smooth, and textured implants. Round ones look the same no matter how they move in the breast, and smooth implants have the most natural movement.
You should schedule checkups with your medical practitioner every few years. This is to ensure the implants aren’t leaking and that you are still in optimal health.
Saline Breast Implants
The other main type of breast implant is saline breast implants. These have a sterile saltwater interior and a silicone exterior shell.
Unlike silicone gel implants, the surgeon inserts the silicone implant empty. Then, they fill the implant with the saline solution.
One of the benefits of this type of implant is a far smaller incision. Why is that important? Well, today you might be googling “types of breast implants” but in a few years you might be googling “what is a breast reduction?”
You’d be able to remove your implants with almost no signs of any breast augmentation surgery.
Saline implants can leak, but if they do your body should absorb the saline causing no harm. People as young as 18 can get saline breast implants in the US.
Breast Tissue Expanders
This type of breast surgery is for trans women or people who have undergone a mastectomy to increase the amount of breast tissue. Expanders stay in for eight weeks or until the surgeon has enough skin to work with to insert more permanent breast implants.
Like saline implants, surgeons add the solution after inserting the expander into your body. The difference is they will keep adding more of the solution to encourage the breast tissue to keep growing.
These Are the Different Types of Breast Implants
There aren’t many different types of breast implants (right now!). But that’s because the best plastic surgeon only wants to use the best FDA-approved materials. Regardless, you can still choose the right material and shape that works best for you.
