WSS Style: David Jones SS16
Held twice a year, the David Jones new season fashion launch is one of the most highly anticipated events in Australia; and at the start of February and August, Australians have come to expect a grand show, a celebration of the best of Australian fashion, from the nation’s most venerable department store.
And for Spring Summer 2016, you can expect the same grandeur from the David Jones Collections Launch, but prepare to be delighted with a quite a few surprises. Indeed, the SS16 Collections Launch was a night full of newness and ’firsts’, significantly marking the start of David Jones’ new brand promise, ‘One Name: Endless Possibilities.
A new Spring Summer season demands a promise of new beginnings and exciting adventures, and the carefully curated fashion shown on the runway of Collections Launch did not disappoint. From the bold revival of lustrous metallics, millennial takes on the ‘70s trend of retro prints and graphics, or the sultry suggestion of boudoir dressing, there was a sense of new horizons and daring confidence to wake anyone up from their winter doldrums.
Another impressive first, the David Jones SS16 Collections Launch was live-streamed on Facebook Live, with several cameras documenting different areas of the show including from the front row and the models’ exit before they take their turn on the runway. Watch it here and feel transported to the night of the event.
Below we show you key trends for next season:
Monochrome

You cannot go passed the classic styling and and sophistication of monochrome chic. The trend is nothing new, but black and white is everywhere making a visually stimulating impact for Spring/Summer. White is always a summer essential in Australia and this year is bigger than ever. White bags will be the new fashion crush for the season. There’s nothing more chic, elegant or sophisticated than a monochrome palette.

Metallic
Summer Metallic Trend & anything that shines and sparkles is going to be huge. Let the metallic piece speak for itself by keeping the rest of your look quite simple and understated.

Boudoir
A hail back to the 90s, the boudoir look is back in a big way. Think silk or satin slip dresses, lace and silk camisoles worn as tops and silk pyjama pants are just some of the pieces seen on the catwalk. The mood is more sensual than overtly sexy. The trend can be tricky to pull off. Obviously, wearing a silk/ lace camisole with classic styled pants by night will add a sexy but classic look for a summer night out or try wearing it under a blazer for work or with jeans on the weekend.

Earthy Tones
Earthy tones and Summer go together like ham and cheese. We love that one of the easiest ways to stay on trend is with colour, and the earthy colour trend is definitely one that we are embracing coming into spring and Summer. Earthy tones are a colour scheme that includes tans, greys, greens, browns. If you have a mostly black wardrobe (like I do), browns and tans really work well and offer a fantastic contrasting and sophisticated colour break.
